Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall technical leadership and discipline ownership for piping engineering across the assigned project scope.
  • Act as the principal technical focal point for piping matters between the employer, engineering contractors, works contractors, vendors and other project disciplines.
  • Review and coordinate piping engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements, specifications, design criteria and applicable codes and standards.
  • Review P&IDs, piping layouts, plot plans, general arrangements, piping isometrics, piping specifications, material classes, valve specifications, line lists and associated engineering documentation.
  • Coordinate and review piping material selection and piping class requirements in collaboration with process, materials and mechanical engineering specialists.
  • Review piping system layouts for constructability, accessibility, maintainability, operability and plant safety.
  • Coordinate piping interfaces with process, mechanical equipment, civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation and control systems.
  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary design, model and constructability reviews and technical meetings.
  • Review contractor and vendor piping engineering documentation and provide technical comments, recommendations and approvals as required.
  • Ensure piping designs align with applicable European and international codes, project specifications and engineering practices.
  • Coordinate with piping stress engineers to ensure critical piping systems are assessed for flexibility, loads, thermal expansion and equipment nozzle requirements.
  • Review pipe support philosophies, arrangements and interfaces with structural and civil works.
  • Review technical aspects of equipment and piping interfaces including pumps, compressors, vessels, tanks, heat exchangers and other process equipment.
  • Identify and manage piping discipline interfaces, technical risks, design constraints and engineering dependencies.
  • Support the resolution of technical queries, RFIs, design clarifications, field changes and engineering deviations affecting the piping scope.
  • Review proposed site modifications and ensure changes are justified, documented and incorporated into final records.
  • Support resolution of piping-related clashes and coordination issues through 3D model reviews or during construction.
  • Monitor the status and quality of piping engineering deliverables and highlight risks or potential delays affecting construction readiness.
  • Liaise with procurement and vendor teams regarding technical requirements for piping materials, valves, specialty items and equipment.
  • Provide technical support to construction during piping fabrication and installation.
  • Support assessment and resolution of piping-related non-conformances, site queries and quality issues.
  • Provide technical input into welding, NDT, testing and inspection matters where engineering support is required.
  • Support construction and QA/QC teams during pressure testing, system completion and Mechanical Completion activities.
  • Review piping punch-list items and provide technical input for resolution and close-out.
  • Support verification of red-line drawings, as-built documentation and final engineering records.
  • Provide support during system handover and commissioning where required.
  • Ensure lessons learned, technical decisions and design changes are captured and communicated across the project team.
  • Guide and support piping engineers and other discipline personnel as needed.
  • Report discipline progress, technical risks, outstanding issues and key decisions to engineering and project management teams.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience within piping engineering, including previous roles such as Lead Piping Engineer, Piping Discipline Lead, or Principal Piping Engineer.
  • Background in delivering piping engineering for major industrial, process or energy projects.
  • Deep understanding of piping engineering documentation, such as:
    • P&IDs
    • Piping layouts and general arrangements
    • Piping isometrics
    • Line lists
    • Piping material specifications and classes
    • Valve specifications
    • Pipe support documentation
    • Stress analysis requirements
    • MTOs / material take-offs
  • In-depth knowledge of piping design principles including layout, materials, equipment interfaces, pipe supports, constructability and maintainability.
  • Good knowledge of relevant ASME, EN and other European/international piping codes and standards.
  • Experience reviewing and coordinating engineering produced by EPC contractors, works contractors, consultants and vendors.
  • Multidisciplinary interface experience across process, mechanical, structural, civil, electrical and instrumentation disciplines.
  • Experience resolving engineering queries, design changes, technical deviations and construction issues.
  • Understanding of piping fabrication, welding, NDT, inspection and pressure-testing.
  • Project experience through detailed engineering, construction, Mechanical Completion and commissioning/handover.
  • Ability to independently review piping designs and provide robust recommendations and decisions.
  • Strong communication, coordination and stakeholder management skills.
  • Comfortable working in large, international, multidisciplinary project organizations.
  • Professional working proficiency in English.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience within an owner's engineer, PMC, EPCM or engineering consultancy environment.
  • Experience serving as the piping technical representative on behalf of an employer, consultant or project management organization.
  • Background on major greenfield industrial developments.
  • Strong sector background in steel, metals, mining, process plants, chemicals, petrochemicals, oil & gas, LNG, power generation or heavy industry.
  • Experience with complex process, utility and service piping systems.
  • Prior project experience in Sweden, Scandinavia or Europe is advantageous.
  • Background in major steelmaking, decarbonisation or green industrial projects is highly beneficial.
