For modification projects on the existing installations, be responsible for the mechanical engineering support to the project managers and follow the modification through all phases from engineering until commissioning and startup.
Providing experienced mechanical engineering support during e.g. the detailed design phases, requires a deep understanding of the mechanical systems on the existing platforms to ensure the new modifications can be implemented safely and efficiently into the existing systems. The mechanical engineer will review the detailed design package and assure the quality of the mechanical engineering parts with focus on e.g. safety, layout & mechanical handling, constructability, pipe stress and shutdown time & philosophy.
The work involves participation in design meetings with internal and external stakeholders, participation in risk assessments e.g. HAZOP, HAZID, participation in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and potentially providing onshore or offshore support during construction, mechanical completion, commissioning and start-up of facilities.
When new RFM's are initiated (Request for Modifications), be responsible for maturing the original suggestion into a conceptual solution, which involves a technical description of the recommended solution including initial estimates on budget and timeline (Statement of Requirements).
Manage conceptual studies and feasibilities studies, which typically involves the management of external design contractor and liaising with several internal stakeholders.
The following includes a list of typical activities:
- Define design basis/design premises
- Piping and equipment layout and design
- Stress calculations of piping systems and equipment e.g. nozzle loads, PSV/BDV relief load calculations
- Transient analysis of mechanical systems e.g. vibrations, thermal changes, or stress during dynamic events
- Incident investigation of corrosion, vibration and fatigue issues e.g. small bore branches
- Fitness For Service (FFS) assessments e.g. in accordance with API 579
- Compliance with relevant ANSI/ASME, EN, ISO and manufacturer's standards
- Preparation of mechanical data sheets e.g. valves, pressure vessels, tanks, pumps, special piping parts etc.
- Detailed design review and input to other disciplines
- Piping Isometrics, Pipe Supports and Equipment layout drawings
- Discussions with vendors (e.g. piping, control valves, pressure vessels, pumps)
- Technical involvement in the procurement process as Technical Approver
