Substation Telecommunication Engineer

Role Purpose
Design telecommunications systems that support protection, control, SCADA, operational voice and data services for Australian substation and transmission projects. The position covers engineering, documentation and multidisciplinary interface management.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop telecommunications architectures, block diagrams, schematics, equipment layouts, cable schedules and interface documentation.
- Design fibre-optic, OPGW, teleprotection, operational data and substation communication solutions.
- Define communication interfaces for protection, control, SCADA, metering and remote monitoring systems.
- Prepare equipment specifications, bills of materials, design reports and technical schedules.
- Review vendor submissions and respond to technical queries during design, procurement and delivery.
- Coordinate with secondary, primary, transmission line and civil teams to resolve physical and functional interfaces.
- Support design reviews, testing strategies, commissioning documentation and issue resolution.
- Apply client cybersecurity, redundancy, availability and network-management requirements where relevant.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or diploma in Telecommunications, Electrical, Electronic or Network Engineering.
- Practical knowledge of utility communications and fibre-optic systems.
- Understanding of teleprotection interfaces and communications used by protection and SCADA systems.
- Ability to produce clear design documentation and check technical deliverables.
- Familiarity with relevant IEC, IEEE or utility requirements and willingness to learn Australian client standards.
- Strong English communication and collaborative working skills.
Desirable Experience
- Experience with IEC 61850, MPLS-TP, SDH, Ethernet/IP, microwave or operational telephony.
- Exposure to substations at transmission voltage levels.
- Experience with testing, commissioning or network migration projects.
Working Environment
This is a permanent, office-based position in Kuala Lumpur. The successful candidate will work as part of an international engineering team, with most assignments supporting power infrastructure projects in Australia. Some collaboration outside standard Malaysian office hours may occasionally be required to support project meetings and deadlines.
