Lead Principal Primary Design Engineer
Location: Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaEmployment: Permanent, full time

Role Purpose
Lead the primary design of high-voltage substation projects for Australian utility and infrastructure clients. This role combines hands-on engineering, design governance, and technical leadership across greenfield and brownfield AIS and GIS projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead concept, detailed, and construction-stage primary design for high-voltage substations and switchyards.
- Develop and review single line diagrams, general arrangements, equipment layouts, sections, clearances, earthing, lightning protection, busbar and cable systems.
- Prepare technical specifications, equipment schedules, design calculations, reports, and construction deliverables.
- Coordinate primary design interfaces with secondary, civil, structural, telecommunications, and project delivery teams.
- Review designs for safety, constructability, operability, maintainability, and compliance with client and Australian requirements.
- Provide technical guidance, checking, and mentoring to engineers and drafters.
- Manage design risks, assumptions, departures, comments, and technical queries through to closure.
- Support proposals, estimates, programme planning, and client technical meetings when required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Strong experience in HV substation primary design, preferably at transmission or major distribution voltage levels.
- Detailed knowledge of AIS and/or GIS equipment, electrical clearances, earthing, lightning protection, and substation layouts.
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary design packages and independently check engineering deliverables.
- Working knowledge of relevant Australian utility practices and standards, or the ability to adapt comparable international experience.
- Clear written and spoken English and confidence working with remote Australian stakeholders.
Desirable Experience
- Chartered or professional engineering status.
- Experience with 3D substation design and digital engineering workflows.
- Exposure to brownfield upgrades, constructability reviews, and site support.
Working Environment
This is a permanent, office-based position in Kuala Lumpur. The successful candidate will work as part of an international engineering team, with most assignments supporting power infrastructure projects in Australia. Some collaboration outside standard Malaysian office hours may occasionally be required to support project meetings and deadlines.
