VAT Specialist / VAT Tax Lawyer

Role Purpose
Join the Swedish tax function as an interim VAT specialist for a one-year assignment with the possibility of extension. Provide qualified internal VAT advice to support strategic business decisions and day-to-day operations. Act as the VAT subject-matter expert in mergers and acquisitions transactions and other strategic initiatives. Maintain compliance with VAT rules and reporting requirements while helping simplify internal processes and create capacity for proactive tax work.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the principal internal VAT adviser for business operations.
- Provide specialist guidance, support commercial decisions, and ensure correct VAT treatment in ongoing activities.
- Monitor developments in VAT law and communicate relevant changes to stakeholders.
- Take responsibility for the submission and payment of selected VAT returns using information prepared by another function.
- Support internal and external stakeholders during VAT-related reviews and potential tax audits.
- Plan and deliver tailored VAT training for internal stakeholders, covering legal and practical considerations.
- Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, both independently and as part of the wider tax team.
- Contribute to the continuous development and simplification of internal VAT processes.
Tasks
- Assess the VAT implications of strategic and operational business decisions.
- Provide VAT input and specialist support throughout mergers and acquisitions transactions.
- Review VAT return information and coordinate accurate, timely submissions and payments.
- Research changes in VAT legislation, case law, rulings, and regulatory guidance.
- Prepare clear briefings and guidance explaining the business impact of VAT developments.
- Respond to VAT queries from business functions and advise on appropriate treatment.
- Prepare evidence and responses for VAT controls, enquiries, and tax audits.
- Develop and deliver practical VAT training suited to stakeholder needs.

- Timely, accurate, and commercially relevant internal VAT advice.
- Selected VAT returns submitted and associated payments coordinated within required deadlines.
- Documented VAT assessments supporting mergers and acquisitions and strategic decisions.
- Clear stakeholder updates on relevant legal and regulatory developments.
- Practical VAT training and guidance for internal business stakeholders.
Authority / Accountability
- Act as the principal VAT adviser for assigned business areas and matters.
- Take responsibility for the quality, accuracy, and practical application of VAT advice.
- Apply sound professional judgement, escalating material or complex matters where appropriate.
- Build trusted relationships while maintaining a fact-based and independent advisory approach.
Requirements
- University or higher-education qualification in finance, economics, law, or a closely related discipline.
- Strong knowledge of VAT law and its practical application.
- Basic knowledge of accounting principles and financial processes.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to form clear, evidence-based conclusions.
- Fluent spoken and written Swedish and English.
- Able to work independently, take initiative, and manage assigned responsibilities.
- Collaborative team player comfortable working across numerous stakeholder interfaces.
- Strong customer focus, commercial understanding, and relationship-building skills.
- Experienced, pragmatic, and able to provide advice with sound professional judgement.
Working Conditions
- One-year interim assignment from 1st November 2026 to 31st October 2027, with the possibility of extension.
- Role based in Solna, Stockholm.
