Position Overview
A leading renewable energy company is seeking an experienced Senior Solar Farm Technician to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of solar generation assets in California.
The Senior Solar Farm Technician will be responsible for operating, maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting solar assets and associated electrical infrastructure across an assigned regional portfolio.
The role includes hands-on maintenance, plant monitoring, troubleshooting, contractor coordination, preventive and corrective maintenance, and response to operational events.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the safe and reliable operation of solar generation assets across the assigned region.
- Monitor plant production and performance to ensure assets operate within established design and operating parameters.
- Identify, investigate, and resolve operational abnormalities and equipment performance issues.
- Perform and coordinate planned, preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical plant equipment.
- Support maintenance of Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment and associated infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot and support medium-voltage and high-voltage electrical systems, collection systems, transmission equipment, and substations.
- Respond to equipment failures, plant events, alarms, and other operational issues.
- Coordinate and supervise third-party contractors performing work at solar facilities.
- Ensure contractors comply with applicable safety, quality, environmental, and site requirements.
- Perform operational and technical analysis to support asset performance and ongoing maintenance activities.
- Prepare and distribute daily, weekly, and monthly operational and maintenance reports.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment condition, plant performance, and corrective actions.
- Identify opportunities to improve plant reliability, availability, efficiency, and maintenance practices.
- Support long-term maintenance planning and asset management activities.
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable industry regulations, codes, technical standards, and best practices.
- Develop effective working relationships with equipment suppliers, contractors, and other technical partners.
- Coordinate with internal engineering, operations, asset management, and project teams as required.
- Ensure all operations and maintenance activities comply with applicable procedures, safety requirements, environmental requirements, laws, and regulations.
- Promote strong electrical and power plant safety practices across all site activities.
- Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and proactively identify additional corrective or preventive work requirements.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 6 years of relevant renewable energy or power generation experience.
- Minimum 6 years of experience within a power plant operations environment.
- Minimum 6 years of experience troubleshooting, maintaining, or supervising the maintenance of medium-voltage and high-voltage electrical systems, collection systems, transmission systems, and/or substations.
- Strong practical experience in at least one of the following areas: power plant operations, electrical equipment maintenance, mechanical equipment maintenance, or substation maintenance.
- Strong understanding of power plant and electrical safety requirements.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Experience using hand and power tools for equipment inspection, maintenance, and repair.
- Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety procedures applicable to power generation facilities.
- Valid driver's licence in good standing.
- Ability to use computers, tablets, and standard business applications for reporting and maintenance documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a wider operations and maintenance team.
- Ability to manage priorities and complete work within required deadlines.
- Willingness and ability to travel between assigned facilities.
- Flexibility to work shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays when operationally required.
- Ability to respond effectively to changing technologies, equipment, and maintenance practices.
- Willingness to complete all required technical and safety training.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- Associate degree in Engineering, Electrical Technology, Renewable Energy, or a related technical discipline.
- Previous solar power generation experience.
- NABCEP certification or relevant electrical licence.
- Previous supervisory or contractor management experience.
- Experience maintaining utility-scale solar generation facilities.
- Experience with substations and medium-voltage/high-voltage electrical infrastructure.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
- Relevant OSHA safety training or certification.
