Job Brief

The Piping Discipline Lead will provide technical leadership and overall discipline coordination for piping engineering across a major greenfield industrial development. Acting as the primary technical focal point for piping, you will ensure that engineering deliverables, contractor designs, and site modifications comply with project specifications, applicable codes and standards, and the overall plant design philosophy. You will work closely with process, mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, instrumentation, construction, and commissioning teams to manage multidisciplinary interfaces, review contractor and vendor documentation, resolve technical issues, and ensure the piping scope remains safe, constructible, maintainable, and aligned with project schedule requirements. The role also provides technical support to construction teams during installation, testing, Mechanical Completion, and handover, while retaining primary responsibility for the engineering and technical integrity of the piping discipline.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall technical leadership and discipline ownership for piping engineering across the assigned project scope.
  • Act as the principal technical focal point for piping matters between the Employer, engineering contractors, Works Contractors, vendors, and other project disciplines.
  • Review and coordinate piping engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements, specifications, design criteria, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Review P&IDs, piping layouts, plot plans, general arrangements, piping isometrics, piping specifications, material classes, valve specifications, line lists, and associated engineering documentation.
  • Coordinate and review piping material selection and piping class requirements in conjunction with process, materials, and mechanical engineering specialists.
  • Review piping system layouts to ensure appropriate consideration of constructability, accessibility, maintainability, operability, and plant safety.
  • Coordinate piping interfaces with process, mechanical equipment, civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary design reviews, model reviews, constructability reviews, and technical coordination meetings.
  • Review contractor and vendor piping engineering documentation and provide technical comments, recommendations, and approvals as required.
  • Ensure piping designs are developed in accordance with applicable European and international piping codes and standards, project specifications, and engineering practices.
  • Coordinate with piping stress engineers to ensure critical piping systems are adequately assessed for flexibility, loads, thermal expansion, and equipment nozzle requirements.
  • Review pipe support philosophies, support arrangements, and interfaces with structural steel and civil works.
  • Review technical aspects of equipment and piping interfaces including pumps, compressors, vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, and other process equipment.
  • Identify and manage piping discipline interfaces, technical risks, design constraints, and engineering dependencies.
  • Support the resolution of Technical Queries, RFIs, design clarifications, field changes, and engineering deviations affecting the piping scope.
  • Review proposed site modifications and ensure changes are technically justified, properly documented, and incorporated into final engineering records.
  • Support resolution of piping-related clashes and coordination issues identified through 3D model reviews or during construction.
  • Monitor the status and quality of piping engineering deliverables and highlight risks or potential delays affecting construction readiness.
  • Liaise with procurement and vendor teams regarding technical requirements for piping materials, valves, specialty items, and associated equipment.
  • Provide technical support to construction teams during piping fabrication and installation.
  • Support the assessment and resolution of piping-related non-conformances, site queries, and quality issues.
  • Provide technical input into welding, NDT, testing, and inspection matters where discipline engineering support is required.
  • Support construction and QA/QC teams during pressure testing, system completion, and Mechanical Completion activities from a technical engineering perspective.
  • Review piping punch-list items and provide technical input to determine appropriate resolution and close-out.
  • Support verification of red-line drawings, as-built documentation, and final piping engineering records.
  • Provide piping engineering support during system handover and commissioning where required.
  • Ensure lessons learned, technical decisions, and design changes are appropriately captured and communicated across the project team.
  • Provide guidance and technical support to piping engineers and other discipline personnel as required.
  • Report piping discipline progress, technical risks, outstanding engineering issues, and key decisions to the Engineering and Project Management teams.
