The Opportunity
An experienced Contract Manager is required to join a project team in Rotterdam, supporting the delivery of a major turnkey FPSO project. This is a long-term contract role, offering the chance to work in a complex international project environment with significant exposure to client, supply chain, and subcontract management.
Key Responsibilities
- Contract Management & Administration:
- Manage and administer contractual requirements and obligations across the main client contract, supply chain, and subcontract agreements.
- Ensure contractual compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Maintain clear, accurate, and robust records of contractual documentation, correspondence, notices, claims, and supporting evidence.
- Monitor contractual deliverables, milestones, payment requirements, bonds, guarantees, liabilities, and other key contractual obligations.
- Provide contractual guidance and support to the wider project team.
- Commercial & Contractual Risk:
- Review and interpret main contracts, purchase orders, subcontracts, and associated terms and conditions.
- Identify contractual risks, exposures, and opportunities, including potential variations, claims, and delays.
- Ensure appropriate flow-down of key contractual requirements from the main contract into vendor and subcontract agreements.
- Monitor contractual interfaces and identify potential gaps between client, vendor, and subcontractor contracts.
- Promote strong commercial and contractual awareness across the project team.
- Change Management, Variations & Claims:
- Identify potential contractual changes and assess their full commercial and contractual consequences.
- Coordinate with engineering, procurement, project controls, construction, and other project functions to establish the impact of changes.
- Manage the complete change process, including preparation, drafting, submission, negotiation, and approval of variations and claims.
- Support the preparation, coordination, and defence of contractual and insurance claims.
- Maintain appropriate claims, variations, risk, and correspondence registers.
- Contract Negotiation:
- Support and participate in commercial and contractual negotiations with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Develop appropriate negotiation strategies in conjunction with the project and legal teams.
- Resolve contractual issues and support the project team in managing contractual disputes and differences.
- Contract Set-Up & Reporting:
- Establish and maintain appropriate contract management systems, registers, and reporting processes.
- Maintain registers covering areas including variations/change orders, claims, contractual correspondence, key deliverables, payment milestones, bonds and guarantees, liquidated damages, delay and completion dates, warranty obligations, and contractual risks and opportunities.
- Monitor contractual developments and ensure appropriate actions are identified and progressed.
- Contract Close-Out & Warranty:
- Lead and support contractual close-out activities with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Support agreement of final accounts and outstanding commercial matters.
- Manage the release and cancellation of bank guarantees and other securities.
- Support the resolution of outstanding claims, delays, liquidated damages, and warranty matters.
- Ensure remaining contractual obligations are appropriately documented and handed over.
- Support settlement agreements and final contract completion where required.
- Pre-Contract & Subcontract Support:
- Provide contractual input into the preparation and development of contracts and subcontracts.
- Support contract and subcontract drafting, negotiation, collation, and finalisation.
- Review and prepare purchase orders and contractual appendices.
- Ensure appropriate incorporation of back-to-back contractual conditions.
- Identify and incorporate relevant main contract flow-down requirements into supply chain and subcontract agreements.
Candidate Requirements
- Essential Experience:
- 5-10 years' experience in Contract Management, preferably within the Oil & Gas sector.
- Proven experience working as a Contract Manager on turnkey/EPC FPSO or offshore oil & gas projects.
- Strong experience managing supply chain contracts, vendors, and subcontracts.
- Experience managing variations, claims, contractual risk, and commercial negotiations.
- Strong understanding of contract administration and contractual compliance.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary project teams in complex project environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate contractual matters clearly to both commercial and technical stakeholders.
- Contractual & Legal Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of the principles of contract law and contractual frameworks, including:
- Contractual liabilities and obligations
- Time, delay, and extensions of time
- Notices and contractual correspondence
- Variations and change management
- Claims and disputes
- Suspension and termination
- Warranties
- Liquidated damages
- Supply chain and subcontracting
- Contractual flow-down requirements
- Common law and civil law principles
- Experience supporting arbitration or litigation proceedings would be advantageous.
- Strong understanding of the principles of contract law and contractual frameworks, including:
- Qualifications:
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Business Management, Law/Construction Law, Contract Management, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or Commercial Management is preferred.
- An MBA or relevant professional qualification would be advantageous.
