Role Purpose

Create and standardise controls and automation design content for an engineering and turbine-manufacturing environment. Develop accurate AutoCAD symbols, templates, and design standards to improve consistency, reuse, and engineering efficiency. Convert and improve junction-box and control-panel documentation while supporting safe, maintainable technical solutions. Success will be measured through technically correct deliverables, consistent standards, and on-time completion of agreed design work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an AutoCAD symbol library for controls, automation, and electrical-design applications.
  • Create standard designs and templates for control panels, junction boxes, terminals, breakers, and related equipment.
  • Produce content supporting ControlLogix, PCS 7, STEP 7/TIA, Fire and Gas, vibration-monitoring, and associated systems.
  • Convert existing junction-box designs and documentation into approved standard formats.
  • Ensure drawings and design records are accurate, consistent, and aligned with engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with controls, automation, electrical, and wider engineering teams to resolve technical questions.
  • Review existing design methods and identify opportunities for standardisation and continuous improvement.
  • Plan and deliver assigned work to agreed quality and timescale expectations.

Tasks

  • Create, modify, and validate AutoCAD symbols, blocks, drawing templates, and reusable engineering content.
  • Translate technical information and existing designs into clear, standardised drawings.
  • Develop layouts and documentation for automation, control-panel, and junction-box applications.
  • Check terminal, breaker, cable, and interface information for accuracy and consistency.
  • Support design reviews, incorporate comments, and maintain controlled revisions.
  • Coordinate with engineers to confirm functional requirements, interfaces, and applicable standards.
  • Maintain organised design files, registers, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Provide practical engineering support across related controls and automation work when required.

Deliverables

  • Approved AutoCAD symbol libraries and reusable controls and automation design content.
  • Standard control-panel, junction-box, and electrical drawing templates.
  • Converted and updated drawings with complete revision and review records.
  • Consistent technical documentation aligned with applicable engineering standards.
  • On-time closure of design-review comments and assigned improvement actions.

Authority / Accountability

  • Develop and recommend standard design content within the agreed engineering scope.
  • Challenge incomplete or inconsistent technical information and request clarification before issue.
  • Identify and escalate design, quality, or schedule risks that require engineering decisions.
  • Organise assigned design work independently while collaborating with relevant technical specialists.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on AutoCAD capability is essential, including symbols, blocks, templates, and engineering drawings.
  • Relevant experience in engineering design, preferably involving controls, automation, electrical systems, or control panels.
  • Ability to interpret technical information and translate it into accurate, usable design documentation.
  • Methodical approach, excellent attention to detail, and a strong commitment to drawing quality and consistency.
  • Experience applying engineering standards and developing standardised or reusable design solutions.
  • Good organisation, communication, and time-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines independently.
  • Experience of industrial automation, programmable logic controllers, or electrical interfaces is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of Rockwell ControlLogix, Siemens PCS 7, Siemens STEP 7/TIA, Fire and Gas, or vibration systems is desirable.
  • Experience with turbines, rotating equipment, power generation, heavy engineering, or industrial manufacturing would be beneficial.

Working Conditions

  • Based in Lincoln, United Kingdom.
  • Initial six-month contract.
  • Inside IR35.
