About the Role
An established construction contractor is seeking an experienced Estimator to join its commercial division. The company delivers complex outdoor construction projects across New York City and Long Island, including commercial developments, parks and public spaces, rooftop amenities, healthcare and educational facilities. Projects combine substantial sitework and hardscape packages with landscape installations and specialist exterior finishes.
This is an opportunity for an Estimator who enjoys understanding how a project will be built, developing accurate costs, and taking ownership of a bid from initial drawings through submission and handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Review drawings, specifications and bid documents to establish scope, quantities and project requirements.
- Complete detailed takeoffs and develop labor, material, equipment and subcontractor costs.
- Price scopes such as excavation, earthwork, drainage, concrete, masonry, paving, planting, site furnishings and exterior amenity spaces.
- Obtain and compare supplier and subcontractor quotations, identifying exclusions, scope gaps and pricing discrepancies.
- Prepare RFIs, clarify design information and identify cost-effective alternatives.
- Develop clear proposals, bid breakdowns and supporting documentation.
- Support post-award budgeting, procurement, buyout and handover to project management.
- Price changes and additional work as required.
Requirements
- Previous estimating experience with a sitework, civil construction, hardscape or commercial landscape contractor.
- Strong ability to read civil, landscape and construction drawings and specifications.
- Practical understanding of construction methods, sequencing, labor requirements, and material costs.
- Experience preparing complete estimates and managing competing bid deadlines.
- Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software such as Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff, PlanSwift or similar, alongside Excel.
- Strong attention to detail and confidence communicating with suppliers, subcontractors and internal teams.
Experience with commercial landscape construction is particularly relevant. Candidates from a civil or sitework background with strong exposure to hardscape and exterior construction packages are also encouraged to apply.
