Job Title: Downstream Risk Engineer (Process Safety / Operations)

An opportunity has opened for an experienced Downstream Risk Engineer to join a leading consultancy focused on high-hazard industries. This role is ideal for professionals with strong technical knowledge in process safety, operational risk, and engineering practices across complex industrial environments.
Working as part of a global team, you will deliver technical risk assessments, support insurance-related risk surveys, and provide strategic guidance to clients operating in sectors such as refining, petrochemicals, and hydrogen production.
Key Responsibilities

Carry out detailed risk assessments to identify hazards, assess protective measures, and support accurate risk evaluation

Analyse major incidents or system failures to determine contributing factors and potential liabilities

Recommend improvements to risk profiling, assignment, and pricing processes based on site-specific and regional variables

Contribute to the development of alternative survey methods, including digital and virtual approaches

Propose enhancements to survey tools, reporting systems, and technology to improve accuracy and efficiency

Work with management to implement cost-effective and high-quality risk engineering workflows

Assist in creating tailored risk management solutions for existing and prospective clients
Skills and Competencies

Strong foundation in operational risk, process safety, and HSE standards

Ability to communicate complex technical matters clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Excellent analytical and planning skills, with attention to detail and a pragmatic problem-solving mindset

Familiarity with interpreting financial and operational data within risk assessments

Strong interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships across a diverse client base

Knowledge of industry safety regulations and best practices within high-risk sectors

Resilience under pressure, combined with effective time management and organisational skills
Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering

10 to 15 years of experience in downstream industries such as refining, chemical processing, petrochemicals, or COMAH-classified operations
-
Proven experience as a risk surveyor or engineering consultant in insurance, risk services, or related roles

Previous experience in oil and gas sectors is considered beneficial
