Job Title: Downstream Risk Engineer (Process Safety / Operations)

A unique opportunity has arisen for a Downstream Risk Engineer to join a global consultancy supporting risk engineering across high-hazard industries. This is an exciting role for a candidate with a strong background in process safety, operations, or engineering risk management, looking to apply their expertise across a variety of complex facilities.
You will play a key role in assessing operational and safety risks for downstream sectors such as refining, petrochemicals, or large-scale industrial processing. Working closely with clients, underwriters, and internal teams, you will contribute to the development of risk insights that directly support strategic decisions.
Key Responsibilities

Conduct site-based and virtual risk assessments across large industrial facilities, focusing on identifying hazards, evaluating safety measures, and informing risk pricing decisions

Analyse significant incidents or failures to determine root causes and responsibilities among stakeholders

Identify improvement opportunities in risk selection and assignment, based on facility type, risk characteristics, and geographical considerations

Support the development of remote survey methodologies and help implement digital tools for virtual assessments

Collaborate with internal teams to optimise survey processes for better efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and quality

Recommend enhancements to technology platforms and tools used in risk surveys

Contribute to the design and delivery of risk management solutions tailored to specific client needs
Skills and Competencies

In-depth understanding of operational risk, process safety, maintenance practices, and HSE compliance

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to non-technical audiences

Proficiency in interpreting technical documentation and risk-related data

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering

10 to 15 years of relevant experience in downstream sectors such as refining, chemicals, petrochemicals, hydrogen, or other COMAH-level industries

Prior experience working in a risk engineering or technical advisory capacity, preferably within insurance, risk consultancy, or industrial auditing

Experience in the oil and gas industry is advantageous
