Senior Engineer Corrosion
Location: Madrid, SpainContract Type: Contract
Contract Length: 7 months
Job Purpose
The Senior Corrosion Engineer will control and mitigate the degradation of materials, especially metals, due to chemical or electrochemical reactions with offshore and marine environments. This role is critical in industries such as oil & gas, petrochemical, construction, and marine, where material failure can lead to safety hazards, environmental damage, and financial loss. The position specializes in identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential risks on large-scale engineering projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Control and mitigate material degradation, focusing on metals in challenging environments.
- Identify suitable materials or coatings to resist corrosion in specific environments.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify potential hazards, issues, and sources of harm across project phases (design, procurement, construction, commissioning).
- Analyze structures and equipment to prevent leaks, cracks, or catastrophic failures caused by corrosion.
- Develop and implement corrosion monitoring programs, including nondestructive testing techniques.
- Develop and implement effective risk mitigation plans and strategies to minimize operational, environmental, and financial risk exposure.
- Continuously monitor the status of risks, evaluate the effectiveness of control measures, maintain risk registers, and provide detailed reports to senior management and clients.
- Optimize maintenance schedules and extend asset life, reducing replacement and repair costs.
- Ensure all project activities comply with industry safety standards, regulatory requirements (such as ISO 31000), and contractual terms.
- Work closely with engineering, planning, procurement, and HSE teams to embed robust risk management processes across all departments.
- Conduct hazard identification (HAZID), HAZOP, FMEA, and quantitative risk assessments (QRA).
- Evaluate operational, technical, financial, and contractual risks in projects.
- Develop risk registers and propose mitigation strategies.
- Recommend design modifications or operational controls to reduce exposure.
- Integrate risk analysis into project planning and scheduling.
- Lead a multi-disciplinary commissioning team (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, automation, HSE).
- Act as the main interface between the Owner/Client, EPC contractor, vendors, and third parties.
- Ensure safety during commissioning, including permit-to-work and start-up safety reviews.
- Coordinate HAZOP, HAZID, SIMOPS, and operational readiness reviews.
- Enforce safe work practices during energization, first oil/gas, or equipment start-up.
- Oversee final handover to Operations and ensure seamless transition to steady-state operation.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
- Minimum 12 years' experience with EPC phases: FEED, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and start-up.
- At least 8 years of experience in the oil and gas industries.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a related designation or specialty.
- Experience working on EPC and PMC phases of major capital projects.
- Strong knowledge of risk assessment methodologies (HAZOP, FMEA, Bow-Tie Analysis).
- Familiarity with engineering design and operations in oil & gas, petrochemical, and infrastructure projects.
- Proficiency in risk management software (such as Risk Watch, Palisade @RISK, Primavera Risk Analysis).
- Strong expertise in quantitative risk analysis (QRA), cost and schedule risk modeling, analytical thinking, and communication.
- Knowledge of project management standards from organizations like PMI or AACE is preferred.
- Prior experience working within a PMC, PMT, Owner's team, or Client-side organization is highly regarded.
- Experience applying industry standards, particularly those relevant to major oil & gas projects.
- Prior Middle East project experience (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Oman) is an advantage.
- Experience in major oil & gas projects, particularly upstream developments, and in gas production or gas processing facilities is desirable.
