Overview
An established engineering services organisation supporting the power and utilities sector is seeking a Substation Protection and Control Engineer to join its remote engineering team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the design and delivery of high-voltage transmission and substation infrastructure projects across the United States.
The successful candidate will support relay protection and control engineering for high-voltage substations and transmission systems up to 500 kV. The role involves producing detailed electrical designs and engineering documentation for utility substation projects while working collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities

Deliver protection and control engineering design for high-voltage substation and transmission projects up to 500 kV.

Prepare and develop engineering deliverables including one-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams.

Develop control and relaying panel layouts, specifications, and equipment wiring diagrams.

Design and integrate SCADA system interfaces including RTUs and HMIs.

Develop auxiliary systems including batteries, chargers, AC and DC distribution panels, conduit systems, and cable sizing.

Prepare bills of materials and equipment specifications for substation projects.

Apply relevant electrical codes and industry standards to engineering designs.

Work collaboratively within project teams including engineers, designers, and project managers.

Participate in project planning, engineering execution, and technical coordination activities.

Support pre-bid activities including technical discussions, site walkdowns, and proposal preparation.

Perform technical analysis related to protection and control systems, grounding, equipment arrangements, and electrical infrastructure.

Prepare new drawing packages, update existing designs, and complete as-built documentation.

Perform engineering calculations and prepare supporting studies and reports.

Coordinate design activities with other engineering disciplines and technical teams.

Conduct design reviews and contribute to engineering quality assurance.

Participate in site visits for walkdowns, construction support, and technical meetings when required.

Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers and team members.

Support project management teams by providing engineering updates and contributing to project planning.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

Experience in electrical substation engineering or protection and control design.

Candidates may be considered at multiple experience levels depending on qualifications and experience.

Professional Engineer registration, or the ability to obtain registration, is strongly preferred.

Familiarity with electrical industry codes and standards used in utility transmission and substation design.

Experience preparing and reviewing substation design drawings and technical documentation.

Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.

Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary and remote engineering teams.

Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills.

Experience with engineering design tools, CAD systems, and common business applications used for substation design.
