Overview
A leading engineering design consultancy delivering mechanical, civil, and multidisciplinary services across the UK water and utilities sector is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer. Based in Manchester, the role offers the opportunity to take ownership of mechanical design for technically challenging water-sector projects, working with a collaborative team across outline, detailed design, and construction support stages.
Key Responsibilities

Produce high-quality mechanical design calculations, drawings, and specifications for water assets.

Support projects across upgrade schemes at sewage treatment works.

Design solutions for pumped storm storage at CSOs and treatment sites.

Deliver mechanical designs for new-build pumping stations and wastewater treatment assets.

Ensure designs meet safety, quality, integration, and technical requirements.

Direct, support, and develop CAD technicians.

Prepare scopes for and review deliverables from subcontract M&E design teams.

Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers, prepare specifications, and review tenders.

Produce design investigations, reports, and technical documentation.

Manage and record design changes in line with project requirements.

Estimate design hours and support programme planning.

Attend design reviews, project meetings, and technical presentations.
Candidate Profile

Approximately 10 years’ mechanical design experience within the UK regulated water industry.

Experience across clean water and wastewater projects.
-
Graduate, HND, or equivalent technical experience.
-
Registered with a professional body and working toward chartership.

Strong IT skills and familiarity with mechanical design tools.

Excellent communication, organisation, and planning skills.

Experience in hydraulic design and UMON schemes is desirable.

Chartered Engineer status is desirable.

Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and engineering drawing standards.
