Job Title: Senior Instrument Engineer
Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Job Purpose
To lead and deliver high-quality instrumentation and control engineering outputs by interpreting client requirements, applying international standards, coordinating with stakeholders, and managing all relevant aspects of engineering deliverables throughout the project lifecycle (from design to commissioning), with a strong focus on technical excellence and cost efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Design Execution
- Review client specifications and technical documentation.
- Prepare, update, and verify specifications and calculations for instrumentation and control systems.
- Develop instrumentation specifications for equipment packages in collaboration with package engineers.
- Conduct detailed design activities including hookups, layouts, wiring, routing, and documentation.
- Perform instrument sizing and selection and supervise 3rd-party vendor studies.
- Maintain and update Instrument Index, Datasheets, I/O Lists, and other key deliverables.
- Utilize tools like SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) or Aveva Engineering System.
Vendor Management & Technical Support
- Evaluate technical proposals and perform bid clarifications.
- Approve vendor documentation and participate in vendor meetings.
- Conduct and lead FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing).
- Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning.
- Manage vendors and field instrument suppliers during EPC phase.
Project Management & Coordination
- Interface with other engineering disciplines, procurement, and planning departments.
- Ensure deliverables meet project schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
- Track progress and support change management (claims, variations).
- Ensure compliance with international codes (e.g., ANSI, API, ASME, ASTM, IEC, IOGP, ISA, ISO).
- Propose value engineering solutions for material and cost optimization.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers.
Profile Requirements
Mandatory:
- Bachelor's Degree in Instrumentation & Control or Electronic Engineering (BEM-accredited or equivalent).
- Minimum 10 years' experience in instrumentation design for onshore/offshore Oil & Gas projects.
- Sound knowledge of international standards and industry codes.
- Strong understanding of field instrumentation, PLC/DCS systems, cabling, and integration techniques.
- Proficiency in engineering databases (e.g., SPI or Aveva).
- Strong communication, documentation, and leadership skills.
Preferred:
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE).
- Experience with OEMs or systems vendors (1-2 years).
- Positive feedback from past employers/clients.
- Experience in proposal support and technical bid evaluations.
