Job Description:
The Senior HSE Design Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and sustainability of designs throughout the lifecycle of projects. As a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Design, the specialist works across various business units and packages, providing expertise related to product design hazards and associated risks. The role focuses on utilizing both qualitative and quantitative risk assessments to adhere to the ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) principle, ensuring that the designs meet the highest safety and sustainability standards while complying with international and national regulations, industry best practices, and contractual requirements.
Main Responsibilities:
Development Stage:

Provide QHSE subject matter expertise for Lever projects in the field, contributing to trials, data collection, assessments, and HSE-related report writing.

Influence the design of new wind turbine fleets throughout the TRA track process.

Develop and maintain generic contractual HSE technical requirements for projects.

Define project-specific HSE technical requirements for new contracts.
Asset Projects:
-
Participate in contractual supplier negotiations.

Provide HSE design input during risk assessments, 3D design reviews, design workshops (such as HAZID/HAZOP), FMEA, HSE maturity assessments, and compliance assessments.

Lead and contribute to product walkdowns/inspections and design risk assessments.

Produce HSE documentation including Confined Space Assessments, Rescue Concepts, Evacuation Plans, and Fire and Explosion Assessments.

Participate in First Article Inspections (FAIs) and define residual design-related QHSE risks for transfer to operations.

Share Lessons Learned and integrate these into future projects via Engineering updates and contractual requirement revisions.
Operations:

Conduct HSE compliance assessments for existing products and retrofits.

Assess the feasibility of retrofit designs in compliance with both standard and local legislation.

Participate as a QHSE design project member in Innovation projects.
Requirements:

Education:
Relevant technical background (e.g., Process Safety Engineer, Design/Product Engineer). -
Experience:
-
Minimum 5 years of practical experience within the wind energy or oil & gas industry, specifically in design risk management.

Proven application of design risk management principles, including the use of qualitative and quantitative tools such as HAZID, HAZOP, design risk assessments, bow-tie, and event-tree analysis.

Knowledge & Skills:

Strong knowledge of design standards and Machinery Directive.

Deep understanding of QHSE principles with the ability to demonstrate leadership in promoting safety and sustainability.

Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, with fluency in English.

Proven experience in training and mentoring internal stakeholders and suppliers.
