About the Role
An established offshore engineering company is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer - Functional Safety to support the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of safety systems across FPSO and offshore production assets. This role is key in ensuring compliance with international safety standards and maintaining the integrity of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) across all project phases and operations.
The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in engineering, operations, and projects to embed functional safety from concept and FEED stages to commissioning and ongoing operations.
Key Responsibilities
Functional Safety Engineering
- Lead and support Functional Safety activities in accordance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards
- Develop and review Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS) for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
- Conduct SIL determination studies (LOPA, risk assessments) and verify SIL compliance
- Perform functional safety lifecycle activities including design, verification, validation, and audits
Project Execution (FPSO / Offshore Projects)
- Integrate functional safety requirements into FEED, detailed design, and EPC phases
- Review and approve vendor deliverables related to SIS, ESD, F&G, and control systems
- Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, and start-up activities for safety systems
Operational Support & Asset Integrity
- Provide ongoing support for operating assets, including management of change (MOC) and periodic proof testing strategies
- Conduct functional safety assessments (FSA) and gap analyses
- Support incident investigations and root cause analysis related to safety system performance
Standards, Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with international standards (IEC 61508/61511) and company specifications
- Interface with classification societies and regulatory bodies where required
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of functional safety procedures and frameworks
Stakeholder & Interface Management
- Collaborate with process, instrumentation, automation, and operations teams
- Interface with contractors, vendors, and third-party consultants
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Instrumentation, Electrical, Electronic, or Control Engineering
- 8-12+ years of experience in functional safety within the oil & gas, offshore, or process industries
- Strong hands-on experience with Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), ESD, and Fire & Gas (F&G) systems
- Proven experience conducting SIL/LOPA studies and developing SRS documentation
- Solid understanding of functional safety lifecycle management and verification activities
- Experience in FPSO, offshore platforms, or major EPC projects is highly preferred
- Familiarity with industry standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 61511, and relevant API/ISO standards
Preferred Qualifications
- TÜV Functional Safety Engineer/Professional certification
- Experience working with major control system vendors
- Prior experience in both project and operational environments
