Job Description
We are seeking a specialist engineer to support the BESS Technical Lead with the integration of a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a major offshore wind farm connected via HVDC. This is a technically challenging and high-profile role focused on ensuring robust integration between BESS, HVDC system, offshore wind plant, control systems, trading and optimisation platforms, and operational stakeholders. The role has a particular emphasis on the BESS interfaces and requires an engineer who can provide input into the development of the operating philosophy, control philosophy, and interface design across multiple systems and parties.

This individual will play a key role in ensuring the integrated system is operable, reliable, commercially optimised, and validated through practical testing and that the BESS is grid code compliant.

Key Responsibilities
1. BESS-HVDC-Offshore Wind Integration
- Support the design and coordination of control interfaces between BESS and HVDC system across a range of operating scenarios.
- Define and manage key integration interfaces between BESS, offshore wind farm, HVDC controls, plant controllers, and other relevant OEM systems.
- Support the BESS Technical Lead to develop integrated operating and control philosophy for BESS, HVDC system, and offshore wind plant.
- Work closely with OEMs and project stakeholders to ensure the integrated solution is designed, built, tested, and commissioned correctly.

2. Trading, Revenue & Operational Interfaces
- Lead the definition of BESS interfaces related to trading, dispatch, and revenue optimisation, including optimiser platform integration.
- Ensure control logic and system design reflect network constraints, including restrictions from shared grid connection, offshore wind conditions, HVDC limitations, and wider transmission system limits.
- Develop functional approaches to automatically limit or adjust traded power when constraints apply.
- Coordinate interfaces between BESS and the trading optimiser, OEM for warranty/maintenance, condition monitoring, and 24/7 control centre supporting system operator and owner/operator.

3. Technical Leadership & Interface Management
- Provide technical leadership across complex multidisciplinary interfaces involving controls, SCADA, trading systems, OEM platforms, and grid compliance.
- Align and coordinate technical and commercial workstreams to ensure a coherent, reliable solution.
- Manage model and interface coordination where BESS-HVDC interaction is critical.
- Work closely with Plant Control Engineers for HVDC and offshore wind plant, and the Lead BESS HV Engineer for aligned design and testing.

4. Grid Code Compliance & Testing
- Lead BESS aspects of UK grid code compliance planning and testing.
- Support and coordinate compliance activities with system operator, working closely with Design & Compliance Manager and Grid Connection Manager.
- Understand operational tripping schemes and compliance testing.
- Ensure control design, plant operation, and interface behaviour support compliance demonstration.
- Coordinate with specialists responsible for studies, testing, and evidence packages.
- Develop test procedures and reports for grid code compliance using approved templates.

5. Integrated Control Design Documentation
- Produce and maintain integrated documentation pulling together inputs from packages, contractors, and OEMs for BESS control design implementation.
- Develop documentation for operational modes, tripping philosophy, control schemes, and interface definitions.
- Clearly define interfaces with neighbouring systems: HVDC, offshore wind, plant control, control room, trading, optimiser, and transmission system operator.
- Ensure documentation is aligned, traceable, and supports design, implementation, testing, commissioning, and operations.

Why This Role?
This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role on a pioneering large-scale integrated energy project, combining a 300MW BESS with a 2.6GW offshore wind farm via HVDC. Work across technical and operational disciplines including power system integration, control systems, SCADA, trading and revenue optimisation, operational/control room interfaces, grid code compliance, and technical coordination.

Join experienced teams across HV, protection, SCADA, metering, commercial, trading, and revenue, with opportunities for growth, learning, and technical leadership. If tackling complex engineering challenges across BESS, HVDC, and offshore wind integration inspires you, this is an exceptional role.

Requirements:
Essential
- Strong experience integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) into complex power projects.
- Demonstrable experience with control interfaces between BESS and plant systems, ideally with HVDC, renewable generation, or grid-connected infrastructure.
- Understanding of communication network infrastructure and cyber security.
- Knowledge of BESS trading, dispatch, and revenue optimisation interfaces within the UK market.
- Experience with optimisers/trading platforms, OEM control systems, SCADA, plant control systems, and remote operational/control centres.
- Understanding of how shared grid connection constraints impact BESS operation and traded power.
- Experience with co-located BESS projects sharing a grid connection with other generation assets.
- Ability to develop and manage integrated operating and control philosophy across multiple systems and stakeholders.
- Good knowledge of UK grid code compliance processes for large grid-connected plant, with a practical awareness of testing and energisation stages.
- Understanding of REMIT considerations and implications for trading and data/signals.
- Experience producing integrated technical documentation.

Desirable
- Experience with HVDC-connected offshore wind projects.
- Broad power system/control interaction knowledge to manage interfaces and challenge OEMs.
- Familiarity with grid code compliance studies.
- Awareness of SCADA integration, metering, protection, and control room operations.
- Coordination experience with multiple OEMs and contractors in complex delivery environments.

Technical Capability Profile
- No requirement to conduct PSCAD or PowerFactory studies, but should understand study outputs, manage technical discussions, review assumptions, ensure proper BESS-HVDC integration, and support compliant, robust delivery.

Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or similar.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Solid background in control theory and practical site experience, especially grid code compliance testing.

Location & Travel
- UK-based candidates strongly preferred.
- Primarily remote working with regular travel. Site is in Norwich; offices in London.
- Expect 1-2 days travel per week, more during critical project phases.
- Greater site presence required during grid code compliance testing, energisation, and early operations.
- For site visits, bring your own work clothes and basic PPE.

Work Environment & Equipment
- Flexible and professional working environment. Willingness to travel as needed for collaboration and on-site support is essential.
- Bring your own PC/iPhone. Devices must have up-to-date iOS and allow security/management app installation. Approval to remove organisational apps/data if contract ends or device lost/stolen is required.

If you are passionate about driving innovation in large-scale renewable energy integration, we would love for you to apply.
