Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Water

Location: Manchester (Hybrid working with site visits)
Contract Type: Contract (Outside IR35)

Overview
An established engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support the delivery of complex projects within the UK water sector. Working as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to a growing portfolio of clean water and wastewater schemes across regulated frameworks.

This is an excellent opportunity to take ownership of design delivery on technically challenging projects, with involvement across concept, detailed design and construction support phases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality mechanical design calculations, drawings and specifications for water and wastewater assets
  • Support upgrade and improvement schemes across treatment facilities
  • Develop mechanical design solutions for pumping systems and storage infrastructure
  • Contribute to the design of new-build pumping stations and treatment works
  • Ensure designs comply with safety, quality and technical standards
  • Provide guidance and oversight to CAD technicians
  • Prepare scopes of work and review outputs from external design partners
  • Engage with suppliers and manufacturers, prepare technical specifications and support tender reviews
  • Produce technical reports, design documentation and engineering studies
  • Manage design changes in accordance with project requirements
  • Support programme planning and estimate design effort
  • Participate in design reviews, project meetings and technical discussions

Requirements

  • Significant mechanical design experience within the UK water sector
  • Experience delivering both clean water and wastewater projects
  • Degree, HND or equivalent practical experience in mechanical engineering
  • Working towards or holding professional registration
  • Strong IT skills and familiarity with engineering design tools
  • Excellent communication, organisation and coordination skills
  • Understanding of construction methods, materials and engineering drawing practices

Desirable

  • Experience with hydraulic design and water infrastructure upgrades
  • Chartered Engineer status
