Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Radiation Protection Officer to lead radiation safety and HSE activities for a major industrial project. The successful candidate will oversee radiation protection programs across the project lifecycle, ensuring compliance with local legislation and international standards. This role is ideal for professionals with extensive experience in occupational radiation protection, industrial radiography, and HSE management in construction or industrial environments.

Qualifications:

  • Higher National Degree (HND) or University Degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.

  • Accredited HSE Professional Certificate or associate membership in a recognised safety institution is desirable.

  • Valid HSE Management System Lead Auditor certification.

  • Valid local Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) license.

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Occupational Health and Safety, with at least 10 years involving radiation protection duties.

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in construction projects (greenfield or brownfield).

  • Oversight of industrial radiography and/or well logging, regulatory interface, and sealed-source management.

  • Experience in dosimetry administration (TLD/OSLD, extremity/lens-of-eye), radiation/NORM surveys, and area classification.

  • Working knowledge of international radiation safety standards and relevant local regulations.

  • Familiarity with safe work practices, ISO 45001:2018, and Environmental Management Systems.

  • Experience with incident investigation software such as TapRoot, SafetyCulture, EasyRCA, or Tripod Beta.

  • Competent in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Experience in the GCC is desirable.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and manage the Radiation Protection Programme across all project phases.

  • Liaise with regulators, operations teams, and contractors to ensure compliance with permits, licensing, and regulatory reporting.

  • Pre-qualify contractors for radiation work and maintain records in a controlled project dossier.

  • Plan and supervise industrial radiography and well logging activities, including area classification, barricading, and public dose protection.

  • Ensure secure handling, storage, and transport of radioactive sources; maintain chain-of-custody and leak-test records.

  • Conduct site visits, audits, inspections, and verifications; issue findings and track corrective actions to closure.

  • Review and endorse project HSE plans, method statements, risk assessments, and safe work procedures.

  • Assess radiation risks for workers and the public; implement controls, PPE requirements, and ALARA targets.

  • Administer dosimetry programs and investigate over-exposures; ensure proper reporting to regulatory authorities.

  • Maintain and verify calibration of radiation instruments; conduct radiation and NORM surveys and classify areas.

  • Manage radioactive waste, clearance levels, transport, and coordination with approved treatment or disposal routes.

  • Lead radiation incident and near-miss investigations; ensure timely reporting and corrective actions.

  • Deliver radiation safety training and awareness programs; maintain competence records and KPIs.

  • Provide strategic radiation protection leadership and independent assurance across all project activities.

  • Support regulatory readiness, audits, and inspections, ensuring compliance with local legislation and international standards.

  • Maintain strong leadership, communication, and data analysis skills; prepare technical specifications and reports.

  • Meet requirements to obtain a local driving license for site access.
