Job Title: Downstream Risk Engineer (Process Safety / Operations Engineer)
Location: Oman
Industry: Refining / Chemical / Petrochemical / Hydrogen / Oil and Gas

An experienced Downstream Risk Engineer is required for a role focused on process safety and operational risk assessment within complex industrial sectors. This is a critical position for someone with a strong engineering background and prior experience in risk surveying, ideally within insurance or risk consultancy services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical risk assessments across industrial facilities to evaluate safety systems, site conditions, and operational controls

  • Support accurate risk pricing by identifying risk characteristics and evaluating existing risk mitigation measures

  • Investigate major incidents or equipment failures to assess liability and recommend preventive measures

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to improve risk selection, assessment, and pricing efficiency

  • Develop and enhance virtual survey methodologies and related tools for remote risk evaluation

  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance survey effectiveness and reduce costs

  • Assist in designing bespoke risk management solutions tailored to client-specific requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering

  • 10 to 15 years of experience in the Refinery, Chemical, Petrochemical, Hydrogen, or COMAH-regulated sectors

  • Prior experience as a Risk Engineer or Surveyor in insurance or related industries is essential

  • Additional experience in the Oil and Gas sector is advantageous

Skills and Competencies

  • Solid understanding of process safety, maintenance, and health and safety practices

  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal, capable of presenting complex concepts clearly

  • Strong analytical thinking and strategic planning skills, with financial awareness

  • Proven ability to build relationships and manage client interactions professionally

  • Familiar with relevant regulatory frameworks and industrial compliance standards

  • Detail-oriented with sound problem-solving skills and commercial judgement

  • Able to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality outputs
