Job Summary
The Principal Systems Studies Engineer – Data Centers is responsible for leading advanced engineering studies and technical analysis relating to power and infrastructure systems within mission-critical data centre environments. The role focuses on ensuring the reliability, resilience, efficiency, and compliance of electrical systems through detailed modelling, simulation, and performance evaluation.
Acting as a subject matter expert, the Principal Engineer provides technical leadership across projects, supports design optimisation, and ensures alignment with industry standards and best practices. The position involves collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, and stakeholders to deliver robust and scalable infrastructure solutions.
Technical Leadership
- Lead complex power systems studies for data centre developments, including hyperscale and colocation facilities.
- Act as the technical authority for electrical systems modelling, analysis, and performance validation.
- Provide strategic technical input during concept design, detailed design, and operational optimisation phases.
- Review and approve engineering deliverables, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with applicable standards.
- Mentor and support junior engineers, promoting knowledge sharing and technical excellence.
Systems Studies & Analysis
- Perform detailed power system studies including:
- Load flow analysis
- Short circuit analysis
- Protection coordination studies
- Arc flash studies
- Harmonic analysis
- Dynamic and transient stability studies
- Analyse system resilience and redundancy strategies (e.g. N, N+1, 2N configurations).
- Evaluate grid interconnection requirements and utility compliance considerations.
- Conduct contingency analysis and risk assessments to support mission-critical reliability.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Identify opportunities to enhance system efficiency, sustainability, and reliability.
- Support development of engineering standards, tools, and methodologies.
- Stay current with emerging technologies in data centre infrastructure, including energy storage, renewable integration, and advanced cooling solutions.
Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience in power systems engineering within mission-critical or highly regulated environments.
- Strong expertise in electrical system modelling software such as ETAP, SKM, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or similar.
- In-depth understanding of data centre electrical infrastructure and redundancy principles.
- Proven ability to lead complex technical studies and provide engineering assurance.
- Strong knowledge of medium voltage and low voltage distribution systems.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary design teams.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
