Job Title: Principal HV Substation Engineer
Location: Walsall, UK
Role Overview:
An established engineering organisation is seeking a Principal HV Substation Engineer to provide technical leadership across transmission and distribution substation projects. The role covers concept, detailed design, and construction support, working closely with clients, suppliers, and multi-discipline project teams.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead development of conceptual and detailed Protection & Control designs

Interpret client specifications and produce technical documentation and Bills of Quantities

Review and technically align supplier quotations

Oversee design calculations, drawings, and secondary system designs

Carry out design checks and manage design risk assessments

Supervise engineers and external designers to ensure quality and timely delivery

Support construction teams with substation automation and secondary systems expertise

Interface with wider disciplines to ensure buildable and compliant designs

Mentor and develop junior engineers
Key Requirements:

Proven experience delivering HV transmission and distribution substation projects

Previous experience designing 440KV substations

Strong knowledge of protection schemes, substation automation, and secondary systems

Experience leading design teams and coordinating with suppliers and contractors

Ability to deliver safe, practical, and commercially aware engineering solutions
