Job Title: Principal Substation Design Engineer

Overview
An established engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Principal Substation Design Engineer to support the delivery of high-quality power infrastructure projects across the United States. This is an excellent opportunity to take a leading technical role within a collaborative and forward-thinking team environment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the physical design of high-voltage substations, contributing to complex projects ranging from 34.5kV to 500kV.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver detailed physical design for power substations with a strong focus on quality and accuracy

  • Review engineering design packages to ensure compliance with industry standards and constructability requirements

  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and stakeholders

  • Produce engineering drawings and deliverables using industry-standard design software

  • Support project delivery in line with schedule and budget expectations

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers

  • Review and validate work produced by team members

  • Maintain a strong commitment to safety in all aspects of work

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution

  • 12 to 20 years of experience in power utility or substation design engineering

  • Strong expertise in physical substation design across a range of voltage levels

  • Professional Engineer (PE) licence required

  • Experience using design tools such as MicroStation or similar software is advantageous

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Working Arrangement

  • Hybrid working model (office and home-based)

  • Candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to the Knoxville, Tennessee area
