JOB TITLE: Power System & Market Modeling Engineer

CLIENT: Global Energy Operator - TotalEnergies

LOCATION: Paris, France - 2 days remote working

ASSIGNMENT TYPE: Residential

START DATE: ASAP

CONTRACT LENGTH: Annually Renewable Contract

Project context:

TotalEnergies has launched an ambitious Research and Technology program on weather and electricity market modeling in order to take strong positions in next-generation energy systems and decarbonization solutions. More and more renewables need to be integrated into the electricity grid, while there is a massive electrification of industries, transport and cooling/heating systems. Electricity infrastructure, especially transport infrastructure, is under great pressure. Based on cutting-edge technologies, the objective of this research program is to provide models (short or long term) to build the deployment strategy, investment but also operation. To achieve these goals, we need sophisticated models that enable accurate forecasts and simulations of power systems and electricity market structures.

What you will do:

You will participate in the technical and economic modelling of energy systems) for the long-term forecasting of electricity prices, particularly on consumption and production aspects. The main technical challenges are:

  • Demand modelling based on assumptions: weather sensitivity, sector-specific growth, social behaviour, etc.
  • Modelling of generation by technology taking into account specific assumptions: penetration of renewable energies, models of hydroelectric systems on water inflow, etc.
  • Adjustment of the energy system modelling taking into account the impact of changing regulations and market design.
  • Support for the development of an electricity market roadmap under the programme.
  • Industrial and scientific research on the modelling and optimisation of the electricity market, and identification of the main challenges related to the massive development of renewable energy projects on the electricity system.
  • Identification and collaboration with stakeholders at different levels (programs, business units, academics...)

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Master 2 or PhD in Energy or Electrical Systems
  • Profile>5 years of professional experience with extensive experience on fundamental modeling of market prices.
  • Knowledge of several electricity market structures in Europe and/or the United States
  • Good knowledge of Python, as well as modeling techniques
  • Good knowledge of renewable energy system modeling software (Plexos, Antarès, PowerFactory...)
  • English and French required
