Job Title: Piping Construction Digitalization Engineer

Location: Yokohama, Japan

Contract: Initial assignment duration is 1 year, with the possibility of yearly extensions based on project requirements.

Background:

This role is part of an initiative to advance digital transformation within piping design and construction workflows to reduce lead time and cost. The key focus is to eliminate dependency on legacy spool drawing tools by generating spool drawings and construction-ready data directly from Smart 3D (S3D). The role also involves utilising Alteryx for workflow automation to support efficient cross-departmental data processing. We seek an experienced engineer to lead proof of concept (PoC) and implementation efforts across design and construction teams.

Key Responsibilities:

A. Smart 3D-Based Spool Drawing & Data Automation

  • Define spool division and drawing output rules using Smart 3D Isogen settings, avoiding use of external spool drawing tools.
  • Automate assignment of fabrication attributes such as Spool IDs and Weld IDs within Smart 3D.
  • Develop SQL-based tools to extract construction-ready spool and weld data from the Smart 3D relational database.
  • Create batch processing tools for automatic generation of PCF, DWG, and PDF files for field usage.

B. Alteryx Workflow Optimization

  • Design and implement Alteryx workflows to join, transform, and format data sourced from Smart 3D and other systems.
  • Automate the creation of spool reports, weld maps, BOM summaries, and fabrication lists.
  • Integrate Alteryx workflows with external systems such as ERP (SAP), Excel, and construction databases to support data pipelines.
  • Develop scalable and user-friendly Alteryx solutions that non-technical users can operate.
  • Optionally use Alteryx Server to schedule and automate recurring data tasks.

C. Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Engage with piping design, fabrication, and construction teams to gather and refine requirements.
  • Lead proof of concept projects and transition successful initiatives to full implementation.
  • Propose and manage roadmaps for digitalisation and continuous process improvements.

     

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in piping design, fabrication, or field construction within the plant or EPC industry.
  • Practical knowledge of Smart 3D including modelling, attribute management, and drawing generation.
  • Hands-on experience with SQL for data extraction and transformation.
  • Understanding of spool drawing structure and its use in fabrication and construction processes.
  • Proficiency in Alteryx Designer for workflow creation and data automation.

     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience customizing Smart 3D Isogen and Drawing Manager workflows.
  • Basic programming skills in Python or VBA to support automation.
  • Familiarity with business intelligence tools such as Power BI for data visualisation.
  • Previous experience in digitalisation projects within EPC environments.
  • Ability to understand technical documentation and communicate effectively in English.
