JOB TITLE: MECHANICAL SUPERVISOR - CONSTRUCTION (ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE)

ASSIGNMENT TYPE: ANNUALLY RENEWABLE CONTRACT

LOCATION: LULEA, SWEDEN

WORK SCHEDULE: 8 WEEKS WORKING (MONDAY-FRIDAY) - 2 WEEK WORKING REMOTE

PROJECT CONTEXT

This role supports delivery and erection of a large-scale AC Electric Arc Furnace.

ROLE PURPOSE

Lead the mechanical construction and installation of the new EAF and associated meltshop systems-from receipt of engineered deliverables and site readiness, through mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning support, and handover to Operations-while driving safety, quality, schedule, and cost outcomes across a multi-contractor environment.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Safety Leadership

- Champion a zero-harm culture; conduct toolbox talks, PTW reviews, and field audits; enforce LOTO and energy-isolation standards for high-energy equipment (EAF transformer/rectiformer, high-current busbars, electrode arms, burners, injectors).

- Lead risk assessments, method statement reviews, lifting studies, and hot-work controls for refractory, shell, and electrode system activities.

- Mechanical Construction Management

- Oversee mechanical erection of the EAF vessel, shell, roof, delta, electrode arms & lifting columns, EBT, slag door & runners, burners/injectors, fume/off-gas ducts, water-cooled panels and closed-loop cooling systems (CW/ICW), shell tilting and lance systems, plus transformer & high-current bus interfaces.

- Coordinate installation sequencing with civil and electrical teams (foundations, embedded plates, cable trays, MCC/PLC rooms, transformer bay) to maintain path-of-construction and critical lifts.

- Assure OEM tolerances: centerlines, elevations, planarity, alignment of electrode arms/columns, shell/EBT geometry, tilting axis, and busbar/contact interfaces.

- Quality & Technical Assurance

- Review IFC drawings, ITPs, WPS/PQRs, and OEM manuals; verify weld maps, NDT, torque and alignment records; control redlines/as-built documentation.

- Lead punch listing and Mechanical Completion (MC) sign-off; manage preservation and cleanliness of critical components (transformer, busbars, cooling skids).

- Schedule, Cost & Progress

- Own area look-aheads and short-interval plans; track progress (S-curves, quantities, earned value) and remove roadblocks with Construction Manager and planners.

- Validate contractor timesheets and variations; protect scope baseline through change control.

- Interfaces & Stakeholder Management

- Coordinate daily with OEM site supervisors, EPC/EPCM, construction contractors, materials management, QA/QC, HSE, Commissioning, and Operations.

- Align mechanical works with automation & robotics prerequisites (e.g., electrode regulation sensors, sampler ports, interlocks) and Plug & Work test outcomes to de-risk hot commissioning.

- Pre-Commissioning & Turnover

- Lead pre-commissioning of cooling systems (pressure tests, flushing), burners/injectors (leak, function checks), mechanical drives (tilt, roof swing), and interlocks.

- Support cold and hot commissioning, refractory dry-out/heats, and first-heat readiness; execute turnover packages and O&M handover.

DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Run daily coordination meetings, assign crews, and agree field priorities and SIMOPs for EAF area.

- Validate method statements, lift plans, scaffold/tagging, and confined-space entries for EAF shell, roof, and EBT works.

- Monitor installation of water-cooled panels and pipework (materials, weld logs, pressure tests, flow/ΔT checks).

- Oversee electrode arm/column fit-up, current-carrying joints, busbar alignment, and contact pressure settings.

- Verify burner/injector positioning, oxygen/natural gas lines, and safety devices (non-return valves, flame arrestors).

- Coordinate with Electrical Supervisor for transformer setting, primary connections, and high-current secondary joints.

- Drive punch closure and documentation for MC packs; maintain redlines and as-built markups in the CDE.

- Support material receiving/inspection; control lay-down, preservation, and traceability of critical spares.

- Report progress, risks, and mitigations to Construction Manager and Project Controls; escalate blockers early.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

- Experience: 8-12+ years in heavy industrial/mechanical construction, including 3-5+ years in meltshop/EAF or comparable high-energy furnace installations (EAF/BOF/LF/VD/RH).

- Technical Depth: Hands-on knowledge of AC EAF systems, EBT, electrode regulation hardware, high-current bus systems, water-cooled components, burners/injectors, and fume/extraction ducting.

- Construction Mastery: Proven track record delivering mechanical erection to OEM tolerances and quality standards on fast-track sites with multiple contractors.

- HSE Leadership: Strong command of high-risk controls (energized systems, hot work, heavy lifts), PTW/LOTO, and incident prevention.

- Quality & Completions: Familiar with ITPs, weld/NDT, torque/alignment, pressure testing, flushing/cleanliness, punch management, MC/TO processes.

- Coordination & Communication: Clear, concise communicator; able to lead daily coordination, interface with automation/electrical, and align works with commissioning needs.

- Tools & Systems: Comfortable with CDEs, model viewers, and field progress tools; basic ability to interpret 3D models for clash/sequence checks.

- Language: Professional English; Scandinavian language skills a plus.

EDUCATION & CREDENTIALS

- Apprenticeship/HND/B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).

- Lifting operations (appointed person or equivalent), confined space, hot-work, and working-at-height certifications.

- IOSH/NEBOSH (or equivalent) strongly preferred.
