Mechanical Design Engineer – Water
Location: Manchester
A leading engineering design consultancy is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to take responsibility for mechanical design delivery across a range of technically challenging water-sector projects. Hybrid working is available, with occasional site visits.
About the Role
The Mechanical Design Engineer will produce high-quality mechanical engineering design outputs for clean water, wastewater, pumping, and treatment projects. You will prepare calculations, specifications, and drawings, and support the wider project team with coordination, technical reporting, and supplier engagement.
Key Responsibilities

Produce mechanical design calculations, drawings, and associated deliverables.

Ensure outputs satisfy safety, quality, integration, and technical requirements.

Direct, support, and develop CAD technicians.

Prepare scopes for and review deliverables from subcontract M&E design teams.

Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers; prepare specifications and review tenders.

Prepare design investigations, reports, and technical documentation.

Ensure compliance with technical, professional, and group standards.

Implement and record design changes in line with project requirements.

Estimate hours required for design packages and support programme planning.

Attend meetings, design reviews, and presentations, representing the mechanical discipline professionally.
Required Qualifications & Experience

Minimum 10 years’ mechanical design experience in the UK water industry.

Graduate, HND, or significant experience from technician level.

Good IT proficiency and familiarity with design tools.

Registered with a professional body and working toward chartership.

Strong communication, organisation, and planning skills.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience

Chartered Engineer.

Experience in hydraulic design and UMON schemes.
-
Experience with clean and wastewater, infra and non-infra designs.

Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and engineering drawing practices.
