Assignment Type: Initial 2-year contract with expectation of further extension

DESCRIPTION

The Environmental Officer is responsible for ensuring that all environmental requirements within the project are met, that the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) is correctly implemented, and that contractors' environmental plans demonstrate full traceability and alignment with project standards. The role supports the Environmental Manager and other project leaders through daily environmental follow-up, documentation, reporting, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Compliance Monitoring and Environmental Performance

- Ensure that both contractors and project personnel comply with the CEMP and all relevant environmental requirements.

- Continuously monitor and evaluate contractors' Environmental Management Plans.

- Conduct environmental inspections, rounds, and observations in line with established guidance.

- Document non-conformities, risks, and improvement opportunities, and follow up on corrective actions.

2. Support to BAS-U and Coordination of Control Activities

- Support BAS-U in planning and coordinating environmental and HSE audits, contractor performance reviews, daily HSE walks, incident follow-up, and validation of the environmental monitoring programme.

- Contribute to the work permit process ensuring that environmental and safety risks are addressed before work begins.

3. Internal and External Environmental Coordination

- Work closely with the Environmental Manager and the project's Environmental Team.

- Participate in planning meetings and ensure environmental aspects are integrated into project decisions.

4. Documentation, Traceability, and Quality Assurance Alignment between CEMP and Contractors' Environmental Plans

- Verify that contractors address all key environmental focus areas, such as waste management, chemical management, noise and dust mitigation, spills and leaks, water management, biodiversity protection, and reporting routines.

- Document comments, gaps, recommendations, and supporting evidence.

Use of Inspection and Audit Results

- Compile results from site inspections, environmental rounds, and audits.

- Document checklists, photographs, non-conformity reports, corrective actions, and follow-up.

- Ensure that all audit findings are communicated to responsible contractors.

Training Verification

- Verify that contractors have completed required environmental training.

- Collect and validate training lists, certificates, and confirmations that personnel have reviewed the CEMP.

5. Integration of Environmental Controls into Operations

- Ensure that contractors' method statements and RAMS are linked to relevant CEMP requirements.

- Follow up that environmental protection measures are included in work preparations and implemented on site.

- Review and support communication channels, reporting procedures, and daily briefings to confirm consistent application of the CEMP in day-to-day operations.

6. Reporting and Improvement Work

- Report environmental status, risks, and improvement needs to project leadership.

- Identify opportunities for improving environmental performance and support contractors in implementing corrective actions.

- Contribute to the development of routines, processes, and documentation where improvements are needed.

Competence Requirements

- Experience with environmental management in construction or industrial projects.

- Knowledge of environmental legislation, permitting processes, management systems, and audits.

- Understanding of HSE systems, work permit processes, and RAMS work preparations.

- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a structured and traceable manner in complex project environments.

- Meriting: experience working with BAS-U, HSE coordination, or environmental compliance roles.
