Environmental Compliance Assistant Engineering Manager
Location: Glen Allen, Virginia / Bridgeport, WV / Charleston, WV (Hybrid)
We are seeking an Environmental Compliance Assistant Engineering Manager to join a growing team within the Power and Energy sector. This hybrid position (three days in-office) offers the opportunity to work on a wide range of environmental engineering and compliance projects across the Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic regions. The role involves technical analysis, report writing, project coordination, and occasional regional travel to project sites.
This position is ideal for a professional who enjoys a challenging and fast-paced environment and is looking to develop expertise in federal and state environmental regulations and methodologies in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the management and technical oversight of environmental engineering and compliance projects, including preparation of permit applications such as earth disturbance and air compliance permits.
- Support the development of sound and noise studies, spill response plans, spill prevention and containment services, and environmental monitoring activities such as erosion and sedimentation control and sound monitoring.
- Contribute to the preparation of erosion and sediment control plans, stormwater management plans, and NPDES coordination and termination support.
- Conduct and assist with environmental site assessments (Phase I and II ESAs) and hazardous waste due diligence investigations for a variety of site types.
- Research and interpret federal, state, and local environmental compliance regulations, including those related to air, waste, chemicals, hazardous substances, and remediation programs.
- Supervise or perform field monitoring of erosion and sediment control systems on construction projects, ensuring compliance with specifications, permits, and control plans.
- Prepare and review field monitoring reports and ensure quality and accuracy in submissions.
- Uphold all health, safety, and quality assurance standards while adhering to project and client procedures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field from an accredited college.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated technical writing ability.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office applications; experience with databases and online reporting tools preferred.
- Ability to assist in managing employees or tasks on environmental compliance projects.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements and agency protocols, with experience in NPDES permitting and best management practices (BMPs).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass required vehicle operation screening.
- Flexibility to travel regionally as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with GPS-enabled data collection tools.
- Knowledge of spill response planning and the Oil Pollution Prevention Act (40 CFR 112).
- One to two years of experience in air compliance, permitting, or pollution control support.
- Basic understanding of sound and noise studies, Phase I/II ESA investigations, and waste management practices.
- Experience performing or supervising environmental field monitoring, particularly erosion and sediment control.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD or GIS (ArcGIS) software.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
- Certifications such as CESSWI, CPESC, or state-specific erosion and sediment control inspector credentials are a plus.
- Relevant training such as ASTM Phase I ESA, RCRA, or OSHA courses is advantageous.
